Hmm... haven't mentioned anything 'bout it in the longest time, but I think I've figured something out for myself concerning Xander Harris' recent asshole-ness on Buffy (as the Duck points out here and in several other instances). True, at the beginning of the series Xander was just a semi-nerdy (or at least off-beat) highschool guy trying to survive exams and demons. However, he began to become much more "macho" once the men in Buffy's life became progressively transient. I believe that he acts more manly in an attempt to play the big brother for Buffy, since he isn't much good for anything else within the group besides witty commentary. Eventually he had kept this act up for so long that it integrated into his persona. However, a moment so fraught with fear and anxiety, such as his wedding, was able to briefly cause his resolve to crack. The moment where Xander first runs off after being shown a false future, his expression and body-posture are more defeated and shy, much like he was at the beginning of the series. But whenever he's within the presence of people he knows, his macho act comes back into play (ex. dropping the pedestal on the demon's head after marching back in).

Just a thought.
